Question 1

Do you offer emergency service?

Accepted Answer

Yes — for heating or cooling failures outside our normal hours, call 317-535-0322 and we'll get a technician out to you as quickly as possible.

Question 2

What are your service hours?

Accepted Answer

Our normal business hours are Monday–Friday 8am–5pm. Call us during those hours to schedule service; for after-hours emergencies, leave a message and we'll respond promptly.

Question 3

What should I expect during a service visit?

Accepted Answer

Your technician will arrive in a uniformed HRS vehicle, diagnose the issue, explain the problem in plain language, and provide upfront pricing before any work begins — no surprises.

Question 4

How often should I service my furnace and AC?

Accepted Answer

We recommend a tune-up twice a year — once for your AC in spring and once for your furnace in fall. Annual maintenance keeps your system efficient, safe, and under warranty.

Question 5

Is a service agreement worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our Comfort Club maintenance plan includes priority scheduling, discounted repairs, and two precision tune-ups per year, which usually pays for itself in energy savings and avoided breakdowns.

Question 6

Are estimates really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We provide free, no-obligation estimates on system replacements and installations. Diagnostic service calls carry a flat trip fee that's waived with any paid repair.

Question 7

Do you offer financing?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we offer flexible financing through Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. with approved credit for system replacements and installations. We'll review the options with you before you commit.

Question 8

How is your pricing structured?

Accepted Answer

We use upfront, flat-rate pricing — you'll know the full cost before any work starts. No hourly charges and no surprise add-ons.

Question 9

How can I reduce my energy costs?

Accepted Answer

Upgrade to a higher-efficiency system, seal leaky ductwork, install a programmable or smart thermostat, change filters regularly, and keep up with annual maintenance. We can run a payback analysis to show which upgrades save the most.

Question 10

Is Energy Star equipment worth it?

Accepted Answer

Generally yes. Energy Star-certified systems meet strict efficiency guidelines that translate into lower utility bills, and many qualify for utility rebates or tax incentives that shorten the payback period.

Question 11

What brands do you install?

Accepted Answer

We're a Bryant® Dealer and also service and install most major HVAC brands including Carrier®, Trane, Lennox, and others.

Question 12

What warranties come with my new system?

Accepted Answer

Bryant® equipment includes a 10-year parts warranty when registered. HRS backs every install with a 1-year labor warranty — and up to a lifetime heat exchanger warranty on select furnaces.

Question 13

How long does HVAC equipment last?

Accepted Answer

A well-maintained furnace or air conditioner typically lasts 15–20 years; heat pumps about 10–15. Coastal or heavy-use systems may age faster. Annual maintenance extends equipment life significantly.

Question 14

Can I replace just the outdoor unit?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but it's risky. The indoor coil and outdoor unit must be a matched pair to deliver rated efficiency. Mismatched components can void the warranty and raise energy bills. We'll assess your system and recommend the smartest option.

Question 15

Is a bigger system better?

Accepted Answer

No. An oversized system short-cycles, failing to dehumidify and wearing out faster. Proper sizing — based on a load calculation — delivers more even comfort and lower bills than simply going bigger.

Question 16

Why do matched components matter?

Accepted Answer

Manufacturers test indoor coils, air handlers, and outdoor units together to hit rated efficiency and capacity. Mixing unmatched parts reduces performance, can shorten equipment life, and may void your warranty.

Question 17

How often should I change my filter?

Accepted Answer

Check a 1-inch filter monthly and replace it every 1–3 months. High-efficiency media filters (4–5 inch) typically last 6–12 months. A clogged filter strains your system and raises energy costs.

Question 18

Are high-efficiency filters worth it?

Accepted Answer

Yes for most homes — MERV 11–13 filters capture allergens and fine dust without significantly restricting airflow when properly sized. We can recommend the right filter for your system.

Question 19

What is a heat pump?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump transfers heat rather than generating it, so it can both heat and cool your home from one unit. In summer it moves heat out; in winter it pulls heat from outdoor air indoors.

Question 20

What is a hybrid (dual-fuel) system?

Accepted Answer

A hybrid system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace, automatically switching between them based on outdoor temperature for the lowest operating cost in any season.

Question 21

What are variable-speed fans?

Accepted Answer

Variable-speed blowers ramp up and down gradually instead of full-on/full-off, delivering quieter, more even temperatures, better humidity control, and lower energy use.

Question 22

What is two-stage heating and cooling?

Accepted Answer

Two-stage systems run on a lower setting most of the time for steadier temperatures and quieter operation, shifting to full capacity only on the hottest or coldest days.

Question 23

What's the ideal thermostat setting?

Accepted Answer

In winter, 68°F while you're home and lower when away or asleep. In summer, 78°F when home and higher when away. Every degree of setback saves roughly 1% on energy costs.

Question 24

Why are some rooms hotter or colder than others?

Accepted Answer

Uneven temperatures usually mean duct imbalance, inadequate insulation, or a single thermostat controlling a multi-level home. Zoning, duct sealing, or a variable-speed system can fix it.

Question 25

How can I reduce allergens and improve air quality?

Accepted Answer

Upgrade to a MERV 13+ filter or electronic air cleaner, add a whole-home humidifier in winter, consider a UV light to neutralize airborne germs, and keep up with filter changes. We can size a solution for your home.

Question 26

I'm worried about mold — what should I do?

Accepted Answer

Mold thrives on high humidity and poor airflow. A whole-home dehumidifier, improved ventilation, and UV treatment in the ductwork can prevent growth. We'll inspect and recommend the right fix.

Question 27

What is carbon monoxide and how do I stay safe?

Accepted Answer

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas from incomplete combustion. Install CO detectors on every floor, have your furnace inspected yearly, and never ignore a detector alarm — leave the home and call us.

Question 28

I smell gas — what should I do?

Accepted Answer

Leave the home immediately, don't flip any switches, and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Don't re-enter until cleared. Then call us to inspect and repair your furnace.

Question 29

Why is my AC so loud?

Accepted Answer

Loud operation can mean a loose component, a failing compressor, debris in the outdoor unit, or an aging system. Schedule a service visit — we'll diagnose and recommend repair or replacement.

Question 30

What is the Freon (R-22) phase-out?

Accepted Answer

R-22 production was banned in 2020 due to ozone damage. If your older AC uses R-22, we can recharge with reclaimed refrigerant short-term or recommend an efficient R-410A (Puron) replacement.

Question 31

What areas do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve Central Indiana including Indianapolis, Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Brownsburg, Avon, Plainfield, Greenwood, Franklin, Greenfield, and McCordsville, plus Whiteland, New Whiteland, and Bargersville.

Question 32

Are you licensed and insured?

Accepted Answer

Yes. HRS Heating And Cooling is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. Our technicians are EPA-certified for safe refrigerant handling, and we're a Bryant® Dealer.

Question 33

What is a water heater's energy factor (UEF)?

Accepted Answer

The Uniform Energy Factor measures how efficiently a water heater converts energy into hot water. Higher UEF means lower operating costs; tankless units generally outscore standard tanks.

Question 34

What does an anode rod do?

Accepted Answer

The anode rod attracts corrosive minerals to protect the tank lining from rust. It should be inspected every few years and replaced when significantly worn to extend tank life.

Question 35

Why is my hot water running out faster?

Accepted Answer

Common causes are sediment buildup reducing tank capacity, a failing lower heating element (electric), or a worn dip tube. A flush and inspection usually solves it; we can diagnose on-site.

Question 36

Can a water heater be damaged in a flood?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If a gas or electric water heater was submerged, the insulation, controls, and gas valve are compromised and the unit should be replaced for safety — don't relight it.

Question 37

Can I use a water heater with solar?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many tank and tankless models pair with solar pre-heat systems. We can recommend a compatible water heater and confirm sizing for a solar setup.

Question 38

Do I need a drain pan under my water heater?

Accepted Answer

If the heater is on an upper floor, in a closet, or above finished space, a drain pan plumbed to a safe discharge point is recommended to catch leaks before they cause damage.

Question 39

How do I maintain my water heater?

Accepted Answer

Flush the tank annually to clear sediment, inspect the anode rod every 2–3 years, test the temperature/pressure relief valve yearly, and keep the area clear. We offer annual water heater tune-ups.
