Winter air is dry and your home is sealed tight. Here's how to keep your indoor air healthy and comfortable all season.
When the heat kicks on and windows stay shut, indoor air takes a hit. Dryness, dust, and stale air can leave your family uncomfortable and even unhealthy. The good news: a few targeted upgrades can make a big difference.
1. Add a whole-home humidifier
Heating dries out indoor air, and Indiana winters can push indoor humidity below 30 percent. That causes dry skin, scratchy throats, static shock, and even cracked woodwork. A whole-home humidifier installed on your ductwork restores healthy moisture levels automatically. Proper humidity also makes the air feel warmer, so you can lower the thermostat and save energy.
2. Upgrade your filtration
A standard 1-inch filter catches large particles but lets finer dust, pollen, and allergens through. A MERV 13 filter or a whole-home electronic air cleaner captures far more, reducing what circulates through your home. If anyone in your household has allergies or asthma, better filtration is one of the highest-impact changes you can make.
3. Consider a UV light
UV lights installed in your ductwork or air handler help neutralize mold, bacteria, and viruses before they circulate. They're especially useful in homes with humidity concerns or where the coil stays damp during cooling season.
4. Bring in fresh air with a ventilator
Tight homes trap stale air and indoor pollutants. An energy-recovery ventilator brings in fresh outdoor air while recovering heat from the exhaust stream, so you get cleaner air without wasting energy. It's an ideal upgrade for newer, well-sealed homes.
5. Keep up with filter changes
Even the best filter does nothing if it's clogged. Check a 1-inch filter monthly in winter and replace it every one to three months. A dirty filter strains your system, raises energy bills, and reduces the air quality you're trying to improve.
We assess your whole home — not just the equipment — and recommend the right combination of humidity, filtration, and ventilation for your family.
