Both heat your home, but they work very differently. Here's how to choose between a heat pump, a furnace, or a hybrid system.
Indiana's climate is cold enough to need serious heating but mild enough that a heat pump can handle much of the season. So which is the better fit: a traditional gas furnace or an electric heat pump? The answer depends on your goals, your fuel costs, and how you use your home.
How each one works
A furnace burns fuel (natural gas, propane, or oil) to generate heat and blows it through your ducts. A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it — pulling warmth from outdoor air into your home in winter, and reversing to cool in summer. That makes a heat pump both a heater and an air conditioner in one unit.
Efficiency and operating cost
Heat pumps are remarkably efficient at moving heat, often delivering two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity they use. In Indiana's moderate winter temperatures, a heat pump can heat your home for less than a gas furnace. But when temperatures drop well below freezing, a heat pump's efficiency falls and a furnace becomes the cheaper heat source.
The hybrid (dual-fuel) option
You don't have to choose. A hybrid heat system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and a smart control that automatically switches between them based on outdoor temperature. You get the efficiency of a heat pump in mild weather and the dependable, low-cost heat of a furnace when it's truly cold. For many Indiana homes, it's the most cost-effective year-round solution.
Which is right for you?
Choose a furnace if you want dependable, powerful heat during the coldest stretches and have affordable gas service. Choose a heat pump if you want a single efficient system for both heating and cooling, especially in a well-insulated home. Choose a hybrid system if you want the lowest operating cost across the full range of Indiana weather.
